Appearing Poles
A packet the size of a postcard becomes six feet of lacquered cane, in the time it takes to turn your wrist.
The mechanism

lacquered paper,
and nerve.
Inside the packet is a coil of tempered steel wound against itself. Release the catch and it wants to be straight more than you want it to stay folded. The lacquered paper sleeve does the rest, and the brass ferrule stops the far end before it stops your ceiling.
The nerve is yours. The cane opens whether or not your arm is in the right place, which is the whole of the practice.
